Today’s Bestiary of the Wilds 2e Early Access update contains 9 Dread monsters, 13 Scorn (or 15, depending on how you want to count the chieftain forms), and 7 more Taken. You can head over here to download it.
Also, you can now directly import these monster stats to your roll20 game with the DeathStalker VTTES extension using the included JSON files! These files do not come with token art attached, but they do have their Token Action macros filled in.
The price of the 2e Early Access Bestiary increased to $20 for new purchasers. While the Bestiary itself will become freely available after it leaves Early Access, the JSON files will only ever be available to Content+ patrons.
Dread Added
You might remember some of these from ages ago. We’ve since updated their stats and some of their actions to better reflect the current power curve of D&Destiny 2e.
- Minions: Geist, Grim, Healing Crux
- Soldiers: Snatcher, Fetch
- Elites: Attendant, Compiler, Husk, Weaver
Scorn Added
- Minions: Screeb, Bandit, Aberration
- Soldiers: Ravager, Lurker, Stalker
- Elites: Cutthroat, Grenadier, Chieftain (in 3 different forms), Raider
- Majors: Wraith, Abomination
- Devices: Splinter Mine
Taken Added
Assume “Taken” is in front of the name, except for the shadows.
- Minions: Shadow Thrall, Goblin
- Soldiers: Shadow Beast, Dreg
- Elites: Captain, Hobgoblin, Phalanx
Fixes and Such
The following adjustments were made to previously published monsters. You should expect much larger changes to the Bestiary in 2027, if not earlier. Once we’re done building out the “basic” units for each faction, we’ll go over it all with a fine-tooth comb.
- Removed Charmed, Frightened, and Petrified from the default immunity list for Taken. Some Taken are still immune to these conditions.
- Adjusted all Taken language proficiencies to just be Hive. We think it’s a neat narrative point, to lose your previous self and become Hive when you become Taken.
- Knight: Fixed stats to be a proper Elite class monster. It was originally a Major unit, then it got bumped down to Elite, but its stats never got bumped down to match.
- Hydra: Quake can only be used when a hostile creature ends its turn within range.
- Ogre: Corrected the bludgeoning damage on Fists attack to kinetic.
- The two Guardian “pets” (the shadebinder’s husk and the broodweaver’s Queen of Threads) from the previous Darkness class update are also included in these Bestiary files.
- Stasis Husk: Clarified in the stat block that it acts once on your turn. It does not get its own turn in initiative.
Monster Roster Goal
We mentioned above that we’re still in the process of filling out the “basic” version of the 2e Bestiary, but what does that even look like? Here’s a quick breakdown of what we want each faction to contain at minimum:
- 13 ‘standard distribution’ units: 3 Minions, 3 Soldiers, 4 Elites, and 3 Majors. These units are arranged in a particular CR pattern to allow for diverse encounter builds.
- Of these units, a certain number of them need to qualify as melee-focused, sniper-focused, exploder, supporter, and AoE-focused. These are the bread-and-butter of encounter design, so each faction needs to have them.
- 3 ‘generic’ Ultras. There’s no set pattern to what their CRs should be.
- ‘Named’ Ultras, such as Rhulk and Xol, are not expected to appear in the standard 2e Bestiary. Named monsters are mostly being relegated to modules and other additional content, such as how Atheon appears in the Vault of Glass module.
- Not all named monsters from the video games will get their own stat blocks. Some named monsters, particularly the early strike/dungeon bosses, are better as ‘generic’ Ultras than as purpose-built ‘named’ Ultras.
At this time, we’ve got 8 factions mapped out for the 2e Bestiary: Eliksni, Hive, Vex, Cabal, Taken, SIVA, Scorn, and Dread. However, as you can see from our Misc section, this doesn’t mean we won’t be making any other kinds of stat blocks. Again, all of the above is our goal for the basic 2e Bestiary. We’re considering stats for other factions such as Spider’s Eliksni, Caitl’s Cabal, Wrathborn, Nightmares, and so on, too.
